Digging Into Yurei Deco - Episode 9

Image
Hey there, and welcome back to Yurei Deco! After a few weeks of episodic adventures that broadened the show's themes but didn't do much to change the status quo, last episode ended with a big stinger in that the Yurei detective club was officially over, per a decree by club leader Finn himself. I honestly wasn't so hot on that ending—which I wrote about in plenty of detail here —but regardless of the show's execution, Finn's betrayal is still a fairly reasonable story beat. Finn has been a mysterious character throughout, so making his biggest decision so far something that puts him at odds with the rest of the characters opens the door to some meaty drama as we explore his actual motives and resolve tensions within the group. Plus, I'm sure Finn's motives tie in with some other mysteries, and with presumably only three or four episodes left, the show has some major revelations to knock out.  However that pans out, I also hope that we don't lose focus on...

Digging Into Yurei Deco - Episode 8

Hey there, and welcome back to Ringtail Reviews! Today I'm excited to get back to Yurei Deco. I honestly don't have a lot to say up front this time— last episode teased a lot of interesting plot developments and added layers to the show's exploration of truth and fiction, and I'm excited to see it expand on both. And on a more personal note, this is the first time since the show started where I'm releasing an episode writeup the same week it came out. I'm so close  to catching up, y'all. Let's do this! Episode 8 Hack sleepily walks up to their shared room with Berry and pushes her out of bed. In an alternate universe, Hack is showing up on a Reddit roommate horror stories post for clipping their toenails on the couch Berry finds Finn secretly working downstairs, using his Hyperverse machine to study the feather Mr. Watson found last episode while ominously saying "Mark Twain." Guess we're in for some plot developments this episode! Also, w...

Digging Into Yurei Deco - Episode 7

Hey there, and welcome back to my writeups on Yurei Deco! Even though I'm ride or die for the show at this point, it's been hard to get a sense of how much the public is keeping up with it—it doesn't rank highly on places like MyAnimeList or Anime News Network, and Reddit episode comments have slowed to a trickle. I've also seen a few discussions about people disliking the show because it's too much of a kid's show, and... man, maybe my brain is broken by years of watching cartoons, but I honestly never made that leap. Is it family friendly? Sure. But there are enough deep ideas here that I can't imagine it being conceived of and targeted towards literal children in the same way as something like Super Shiro . Also, let's not forget that Yurei Deco literally airs at midnight in Japan. A bright color palate does not a kid's show make, and anime can be mature without grimdark violence and cynicism.  But kid's show or not, I'm committed to writi...

Digging Into Yurei Deco - Episode 6

Hey there, and welcome back to Yurei Deco! This show has been my favorite of the summer 2022 anime season by a long shot, and never moreso than in its excellent  fifth episode . That last episode's exploration of how internet mistruths can become viral trends that eventually fade into social media background noise really spoke to me—not only in its gesturing at the morally gray state of social media and the way even the most harmless-seeming fabrications can escape their creators, but also in the way it explored Berry's desire to do the right thing in a situation that had no right answer. Berry's young, and one of the central challenges of growing up is experiencing the murky, infinitely complex waters of adulthood, and realizing that there are some things that have no easy solutions, and some mistakes that can't be perfectly righted. My rambling aside, I'm curious to see what this next episode is about, given that the preview mentions our mysterious, gas-masked Sm...
